Beatbox Academy at Battersea Arts Centre

On Saturday, I was invited to cover the exciting ‘Sound Takeover’ event in the pretty south-west sides of London. A large theatre in the Battersea Arts Centre was filled as an audience had the pleasure of watching some serious talent.

Spoken word artists, soulful singers and first-rate rappers graced the stage with their skills before the headliners, Beatbox Academy took over and blew us all away. The 16-strong group consisted of young people with seriously musical mouths whether it was through singing, scatting or spitting bars. They provided entertainment, laughs and there was even a hint of competition as the night ended with some tense but hilarious beatbox battles. The entire group were great however, I must give a special shoutout to the adorable little lady in the burgundy jeans. Not only was her voice excellent but she was moving and grooving like this was the performance of her life! The crew were also joined by the much-loved UK Champion Beatboxer, HOBBIT. His 12 years of practice shone as he absolutely smashed his performance and had the whole audience vibing. It’s safe to say that he will never need a DJ at any of his parties as his freestyle seemed to provide more than enough bass… The Academy’s performance ended with a group jam which was so much fun to watch and certainly a memorable end.

Want to see more? Scroll down, have a look at their music video and at a few cool snaps I got from the event. Also, follow the guys on their Twitters!
